YP Roundtable with Anne Mahlum

Posted by Young Professionals on Wednesday, November 22nd, 2017 in Entrepreneur Spotlight, Event News, Latest News, Personal Interest | Comments (0)

The Bismarck/Mandan Young Professionals Network was pleased to welcome Anne Mahlum, founder of the nonprofit organization Back on my Feet  and the studio solidcore, as the latest YP Roundtable speaker.  The group met at the Bismarck State College National Energy Center of Excellence on Tuesday, November 21st.

Anne Mahlum grew up in Bismarck and had a very happy childhood. When she was 16, her life drastically changed. Through a series of family revelations and issues, Anne’s negative emotions built up. She turned to running because it made her feel powerful and in control of her life. Over the next several years, Anne double majored in college and then moved to Washington, D.C. to complete her Master’s degree. At the age of 26, she found herself in Philadelphia, searching for her purpose and passion. She found it through the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission, which she passed each morning on her daily run. Anne started a running group at the shelter, which began with 9 men in July 2007. Each runner signed an agreement acknowledging that:

  1. They would show up on time, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6:00 a.m. for their run, and that
  2. They would treat their teammates with dignity, respect and encouragement.

Anne felt drawn to these individuals and, through running, they all found a common purpose. She sought to teach society that these individuals were not defined by their homelessness, that they wanted the same things that we all do – to feel appreciated, recognized, loved and cared for. Anne’s running group has now turned into a life changing program affecting over 6,000 individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness.   Back on My Feet seeks to revolutionize the way our society approaches homelessness. Their unique running-based model demonstrates that if you first restore confidence, strength and self-esteem, individuals are better equipped to tackle the road ahead and move towards jobs, homes and new lives.

Anne stepped down as CEO of Back on My Feet, and in 2013 founded solidcore, a high-intensity, low-impact workout. Solidcore has grown to 29 studio locations, and the goal is for 50 by the end of next year. Many of us complain that we “don’t have the time” to do certain things, when in reality, we just aren’t making it a priority. Anne recommended that if you want to make a resolution, you need to set aside an exact time. For example, rather than saying “I’m going to read more”, decide “I’m going to start each day at 6:00 a.m. by reading my book”.

Q&A with Anne

What advice do you have for entrepreneurs?

  • “Know what you’re good at and know where your talents lie, and when to outsource the rest. Surround yourself with mentors and smart/intellectual people.”

What books do you recommend?

  • “I am currently reading The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer. I would highly recommend How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. “

If you could go back in time, what would you say to 25 year old Anne?

  • “Don’t be so hard on yourself.”

Thanks to Anne for sharing her incredible story with the YP Network!

Meet Jesse Freitag

Posted by Katie Nehl on Thursday, October 26th, 2017 in Entrepreneur Spotlight, Latest News | Comments (0)

Jesse Freitag - Reach Digital Marketing (002)Meet Jesse, a Bismarck native and active member of the Entrepreneur Team.

Jesse is a Senior at the University of Mary, studying Business Administration, and also the owner of Reach Digital Marketing. He learned the world of business at a young age, helping work for Sparling Construction, a company owned by his dad. At first he started doing the basic things, like answering phones, and setting appointments. This soon evolved into him organizing and running the social media and marketing for the company. This sparked a passion in Jesse for that entrepreneurial lifestyle and thus, last year he started his own business.

When Jesse is not at school or working on projects for his business clients, he can be found enjoying time with his family and friends, and continually working on improving himself. Jesse tries to read at least four to five books a month related to business, marketing or success, which he finds to help keep him motivated.

As a young entrepreneur, Jess understands challenges, but believes that is what entrepreneurs are meant to do, overcome challenges. In the beginning stages of his company, Jesse is learning the balance between scaling too quickly and being able to help as many businesses as he can.

His advice for other young professionals? Always be learning. Jess says, “It was Mark Twain who said, ‘I never let my schooling get in the way of my education.’ I’ve found that to be so true. While I believe schooling is important, I think it’s more important to always be learning outside of school and teaching yourself new skills.”

Entrepreneur Spotlight: Tim Juelson, MD

Posted by Young Professionals on Friday, February 3rd, 2017 in Entrepreneur Spotlight, Latest News, Personal Interest, Professional Tips | Comments (1)

Tim Juelson Head and Shoulder

Name: Tim Juelson

Age: 38

Hometown:  Hillsboro, ND

Education: The Andrews Institute (FL), University of Missouri (UMKC), UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences

Name of Business: The Bone & Joint Center

Bismarck Surgical Associates

SOMIA, LLC (commercial property)

La Salle Partners, LLC (Hay Creek Shops)

Business Type: Medical – Orthopaedic Sports Surgeon at The Bone & Joint Center, Bismarck Surgical Associates

Hay Creek Investor/Governing Board

Personal Real Estate Business – SOMIA, LLC

Other partnerships on additional ventures (LLC’s/LLP’s)

How I got started:

I was always interested in orthopaedic sports surgery after I tore my own ACL. In high school I wanted to become an orthopaedic sports surgeon which only requires an additional 14 years of school of training, so there were a few naysayers along the way! Somehow I was fortunate to obtain a sports fellowship with Dr. Andrews and loved working in Florida while taking care of the athletes we watch on TV. Ultimately, I got started when I was young and my parents taught me about a work ethic, perseverance, and dedication.

Throughout all this I have always been interested in finance and investing. We took a loan after the stock market crash in 2009 to buy stocks and have continued ever since that time. My brother has worked in finance since the early 2000’s so he has also been a great influence. I have been blessed to have some great partners at Bone & Joint and BSA who are involved in various business ventures who have been great mentors. My wife and I have our own property business that we started last year and our properties are growing each year.

What I do every day:

Surgery, clinic, take care of the University of Mary athletes, medical board meetings, other business meetings, and most importantly enjoy my wonderful wife and two daughters.

Successes:

My family

The Bone & Joint Center, BSA, SOMIA, working with the University of Mary athletes, teaching other orthopaedic surgeons from around the world various sports procedures in Chicago at the Orthopaedic Learning Center

We published a paper in the Journal of Arthroscopy last year while here in Bismarck

Challenges:  We face them every day in medicine, surgery, real estate, personal life and other businesses. It helps us grow and better ourselves.

Advice for other young professionals:   Figure out solutions when others are hung up on other things that just serve as distractors (disappointment, complaining, etc.). Don’t be afraid to dream too big or worry about obsessing about your work. Work and life balance is excellent when one loves their jobs and is able to enjoy quality family time also. We involve our kids in as much of our businesses as possible. They have a great start and have each purchased a couple shares of Disney and Apple so that they can learn the ups and down of finance.

Entrepreneur Spotlight: Josi Jenson

Josi JensonName: Josi Jenson

Age: 28

Hometown:  Buffalo, SD

Education: Doctor of Chiropractic

Name of Business: Rejuv Wellness Roshau Chiropractic

Business Type: Health Care Professional Services

How I got started: As college was winding down, I had decided to move close to home.  I chose Bismarck, ND because of the job opportunity here at RWRC and the drive home was only 2 1/2 hours.  Many of my friends and family were wondering why I chose Bismarck.  Honestly, I had the same question many times.  Bismarck was foreign to me, but I did know the job opportunity was great and starting new sounded refreshing. So, here I am, 2 years later, and I have fallen in love with this community and all of the people I have met here. With being completely new to the area, it was crucial for the success of my business to get out of my comfort zone and begin meeting people.  I heard an ad come across the radio about the Young Professionals Network, and I joined right away.  I am thankful for this group every day because I have met my best friends through the network.  It also jump started my business and built my confidence.  I thought “Wow, my dreams are coming true!” Believe me, there were a ton of ups and downs in the first 2 years of practice, but the lessons learned have produced the most success, along with creating new dreams and goals.  I am proud to announce my new venture as a business owner of CORE Family Chiropractic.  Mentors throughout my path all shared the same advice, “if you are not growing, you are dying”. With that advice, I have advanced my chiropractic career with CORE Family Chiropractic, which will be open in a few weeks.

What I do every day:  What I do on a daily basis varies. Primarily, I am in the practice, improving people’s health through chiropractic adjustments and wellness education. When I am not seeing patients, then I am usually out meeting people through organizations and meetings. Also, I have presented in the community, performing different workshops to improve health.  I am hoping to perform more of these workshops, so behind the scenes, I am working on different topics to present to businesses and people. My health is very important to me, because the healthier I am, the more I can support my patients along their wellness journeys. Growing a business is not always easy, so making sure to take care of yourself is very important in your own success. Don’t forget to have fun along the way! Read More→
