Posted by Joanna Drennen on Thursday, April 4th, 2019 in Event News, Latest News | Comments (0)

We’re excited to introduce our 2019 YPN VP candidates, Ryan Jockers and Katie Nehl!

Over the next few weeks, we’ll share information about these two – starting today! – so you can get to know them better before casting your vote at our Cinco Anniversary Celebration on May 8!

Ryan Jockers

Where Are You From: Tacoma, WA
Place Of Employment: North Dakota University System
Job Title: Strategic Analytics Coordinator
How Long You’ve Been In The YPN: Since March 2018
Fun Fact: Living in North Dakota for 13 years, you learn how to have fun in the winter. Our house is full of board games and card games, and I really enjoy trying out new games that I find with my family and friends, especially in January…

Katie Nehl

Where Are You From: Richardton, ND
Place Of Employment: First Community Credit Union
Job Title: Communications Manager
How Long You’ve Been In YPN: I joined the Bismarck-Mandan Young Professionals Network right when I moved to Bismarck, three years ago. Prior to that, I was involved in the Young Professionals Network in Jamestown for three years.
Fun Fact: I grew up on a cattle ranch in western ND that has been family-owned for 133 years, this year! As a result, I’ve learned the value of not only hard work, but the importance of dedication. Growing up on a ranch also allowed me the opportunity to develop a strong passion for riding horse, beginning before I could even walk. I competed in small town rodeos, high school rodeo and also participated in 4-H. I still rodeo and own horses to this day! It’s a huge passion of mine.

Stay tuned for more information about our Vice President candidates!

YPN Hosts Roundtable with Steve D. Scheel

Posted by Katie Nehl on Thursday, February 28th, 2019 in Event News, Latest News | Comments (0)

Steve D. Scheel addressed more than 50 young professionalsat the YP Roundtable on Wednesday, February 27th. The event was held in the BSC Auditorium and the crowd included YP members, Scheels staff andattendees from our business partners.

Steve discussed his career at Scheels that started when hewas a child getting 1 penny per bag of nuts and bolts that he packaged in his father’s hardware store. He started on the selling floor at age 15, specializing in hockey, skates, and skis. He worked his way through the ranks and is currently the Board Chairman. Throughout his career, Steve received training and mentorship from multiple individuals. He stressed the importance of having mentors who demonstrate various aspects of success. He had certain mentors who taught him specifically the value of communication, others who showed him howto be a good merchant and others who taught him the principals of finance.

Scheels has experienced tremendous growth in its over 100years in operation. As a 5 generation business, the model and practices haveevolved over the years to make the company what it is today. Steve wasinstrumental in the shift from operating the business as a hardware, housewares, and sporting goods store to the exclusive focus on sporting goods, which hasmade the company so successful. Following the shift to exclusively offering sporting goods, Steve took over as President and CEO.

Under Steve’s direction, the Scheels brand continued to grow opening locations across the country. However, when he took over as President and CEO in 1989, approximately 50% of the store leaders were failing in their positions. He recognized the need for better mentorship and training programs for store leaders and implemented a robust internal training program for all employees. Leadership is a crucial aspect of the company’s success. All hiring for management positions is done within the company – individuals work their way into management based on performance. Every employee is viewed as a teammate –Steve stressed that there are no ‘bosses’, just teammates.

He also discussed the importance of the company’s culture and the role culture has played in the success of the Scheels brand. Leaders at Scheels have 5 goals:

  •  Hire for attitude and train for skill
  • Lead by example
  • Immerse our staff in our culture
  • Help them become great at what they do
  • Make sure they enjoy their career or part time job at Scheels

Another major contributor to the culture is the ownership structure. Scheels is an employee-owned company (ESOP) which means all thecompany stock is owned by Scheels employees. Steve noted that they expect top performance from their teammates, and they see the results of that performance in the value of the stock.

Scheels is one of the few retailers that is continuing to open new brick and mortar stores, with three set to open in 2020. Steve credited this to the experience customers have when they come to the stores.  From the shooting range to the Ferris wheel, stores are designed to be a place that families will enjoy their shopping experience. In addition, a key to success is separating the men from the women by placing their ‘sections’ in opposite sides of the store. This encourages them to shop in areas where all the merchandise is tailored to their needs. Finally, Scheels prides itself on outstanding customer service. Steve said that Scheels wins “Best Customer Service” in not only retail categories, but allcategories on a regular basis in their stores across the country. These awards are attributed to the diligent training program that staff members experience giving them the product knowledge and people skills to best serve the customers at Scheels.

Steve responded to nearly 25 minutes of questions and answers and graciously shared additional insight based on the questions of our Members. We appreciate Steve taking the time to present to us and visit with our Membersafterward. The YP Network donated $100 to the Legacy Children’s Foundation in Fargo as a thank-you to Steve for his presentation. In addition, we provided a Pride of Dakota gift basket full of goodies, which he promptly gave to the Bismarck Scheels staff members to take back to their break room and share. Yet another testament to the servant leadership that Steve embodies. Thank you for your presentation Steve!

YP Roundtable with Patrick Atkinson Recap

Posted by Amy Brown on Friday, September 28th, 2018 in Event News, Latest News, Professional Tips | Comments (0)

Over 30 young professionals and community leaders attended a YP Roundtable with Patrick Atkinson on Wednesday, September 19th.  The event was held at the BSC National Energy Center of Excellence Auditorium.  Thanks to BSC for hosting the event!

While working for a crisis line in college Patrick was exposed to the “underbelly of the beast” and the needs of a hurting world.  After college graduation in 1981, he turned down numerous lucrative corporate job offers to work with runaways, prostitutes, and gang members in New York City.  His work brought him to many countries within Central America.  Founded in 1991, the GOD’S CHILD Project helped three children on day one.  Within its third year, they were helping 400 children.  Today they provide essential care for over 5,000 children and 8,700 widows and single mothers in Guatemala, El Salvador, India, Malawi and the United States.  For many years the GOD’S CHILD Project was funded through Mr. Atkinson’s books, articles, modeling, productions and inventions (www.atkinsoncenter.org).

6 Take Aways from Patrick

  1. Be an entrepreneur for social good. Know yourself. Know what you know and know what you don’t know.
  2. Don’t be afraid to say “yes”, give it a try and give it your best.
  3. Running a charity is running a business. You have to first pay payroll, second taxes and third insurance. Having a legal structure is very important.
  4. Having a “charitable heart” is not the same as running a charity corporation.
  5. You have to take care of yourself to avoid burnout. You are a valuable asset.
  6. It is important to build the machine and build the background of your company. Make sure you hit the “reset” button once you reach the point in your business where you realize “this is bigger than me”.

Mr. Atkinson current serves as CEO and is the founder of The GOD’S CHILD Project (www.GodsChild.org), an international network of charities, which includes the Institute for Trafficked, Exploited & Missing Persons (www.ITEMP.org). He serves on for-profit and non-profit boards of directors, and is the author / co-author of six books, including the international selling Message for My Child and The Powerful You.

Thank you, Patrick, for speaking to the Bismarck-Mandan Young Professionals Network!
