Hometown: Charter Oak, IA
Education: University of Northern Iowa, Northwestern Health Sciences University (chiropractic school)
Name of Business: BIS-MAN Chiropractic & Acupuncture
Business Type: Corporation
How did you get started?: I all started when I was injured lifting weights for football in high school to the point that I was not able to stand up. I went to the chiropractor for a few visits and was back on the football field in a week. I was a fan immediately of chiropractic, but did not think of it as a profession at that time. In college, I started as an athletic training major, but after a year I knew that I was not in exactly the right field, but I was close. I ended up visiting a couple chiropractic schools and then knew that I had found what I had been searching for.
What I do every day: Wake up with a sense of purpose and try to affect those I come in contact with everyday in a positive way whether it’s a patient, a friend, or the checkout person at the grocery store. One of my favorite quotes goes like this, “We never know how far reaching something we may think, say or do today will affect the lives of others tomorrow.”
Successes (best part): Rachael (my wife, who I met in chiropractic school) and I have dreamed of having our own clinic for years so the best part for us is simply that we have successfully opened our clinic and that we are helping people everyday.
Challenges: I would say the biggest challenge is that they [challenges] happen everyday. You can do your best to organize and prepare for what happens with your business or life, but things will still go wrong. The thing I try to do (not always successfully) is to stay calm and take them on one at a time and know that it will not always work out perfectly, but it will not be for lack of trying.
Advice for other YP’ers: Do not put things off. This is coming from someone that used to be (occasionally still sometimes) a habitual procrastinator.
