Entrepreneurs Among Us: Cashman’s Nursery

Posted by Young Professionals on Monday, October 12th, 2015 in Event News | Comments (2)

On September 24th, a group of YPN members gathered to listen to the story of how Cashman’s Nursery & Landscaping came to be a staple in the Bismarck/Mandan community and surrounding areas. It’s not too often the YPN gets an opportunity to hear the story of a 120 year-old business.

Dan Cashman sharing the Cashman’s Nursery & Landscaping story with YPN members

Dan Cashman is currently the 3rd generation owner. Cashman’s nursery is a go-to place in town for all your tree, shrub, plant, Christmas tree, and landscaping needs. They are open around 10 months out of the year. During their busy season, it is not uncommon for them to employ 60-70 employees.

Dan shared many great historical stories with us on Cashman’s history. One amazing story involved how the tree salesmen used to conduct business. Back in the day, it was very common for these individuals to fly by plane and scope out the landscape. When they saw a farm that didn’t have many trees or a shelter belt, they would find a suitable place to land the plane and go sell trees. Times have certainly changed.

Dan’s message for success to the YPN members in attendance was simple- you must learn to evolve. People aren’t selling trees via airplane today. If you are remaining stagnant, you are falling behind. You must always be prospecting and seeking out new business opportunities. Dan also talked about the challenges faced with running a family business. While there are challenges, he talked about how rewarding it is to keep everything in the family.

Thank you Dan for all your stories and words of wisdom!
